Committees

  Congregational Care
Meets the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 PM  The ministry of this committee is to encourage, sustain, and develop caring actions and processes within First United Presbyterian Church.  The committee serves on behalf of the congregation to facilitate and encourage action steps to care for church members and friends in a meaningful and spiritual way.  The committee plans special fellowship events throughout the year, organizes the hosting of fellowship time following the worship service each Sunday, oversees the transportation ministry, and maintains accurate information on the members and friends of the congregation.

  Christian Education  
The ministry of this committee is to provide and support quality educational programs for the families of our congregation and our community.  These are intended to help individuals of all ages grow in their understanding of God and how to live as followers of Jesus Christ.  This is accomplished through oversight and development of such programs as Sunday School, Vacation Bible School , Christian camping opportunities, Bible studies, and youth activities.  The Christian Education committee meets the first Sunday of the month.

  Gifts and Memorials
This is a subcommittee that reports to the Property and Finance Committee.  The ministry of this subcommittee is to provide opportunities for individuals to give gifts and memorials to the congregation and then to use those gifts and memorials for the benefit of the First United Presbyterian Church’s overall ministry.  This is accomplished by establishing and administering a system for the giving of gifts and memorials, identifying items that may be purchased for the benefit of the ministry, and by administering any funds established by a gift or memorial.

  Mission/Evangelism
This committee is charged with the education of the congregation in the area of Christian outreach within the community, nation, and internationally.  The ministry of this committee is two-fold.  First, this committee is responsible for identifying appropriate needs to commit resources of time, money, and talent on behalf of the congregation.  Through regular “Moments for Mission” during worship services, promotion of special offerings, organizing trips, creating displays throughout the building, and other special events, this portion of the committee’s ministry is accomplished.

Second, this committee is to promote the sharing of the Gospel in the community and surrounding area of Winterset.  This is accomplished by identifying the spiritual needs of individuals in our community and developing opportunities in which the Gospel may be shared in meeting those needs.  In addition to this, the committee strives to promote the work of the this congregation and the opportunities we provide within the community.  This committee oversees the recording and airing of portions of our worship services on the local access cable station.  Finally, this committee is charged with the responsibility to identify barriers to the welcoming of individuals and developing plans to remove those barriers.  The committee meets the first Tuesday of the month.

  Nominations
The ministry of this committee is to identify individuals that are called to serve as officers and members of special committees and task forces of the congregation.  This is accomplished by reviewing the gifts of the individuals who are currently serving, determining what gifts are needed, and, through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, identifying individuals who have those gifts.  This committee meets as needed.

  Personnel
The ministry of this committee is to develop and implement policies and procedures in regards to the paid staff and volunteers of the church.  This is accomplished by writing a personnel manual which contains appropriate policies and procedures, writing and revising job descriptions for staff and volunteers, establishing a performance review system for staff, ensuring appropriate background checks are conducted, reviewing compensation, and making compensation recommendations to the Session.  This committee meets following worship on the fourth Sunday of the month.

  Property and Finance
The ministry of this committee is to oversee the physical structures and financial accounts held in trust by First United Presbyterian Church.  This is accomplished by regular inspection of all property, ensuring proper maintenance and repairs of property, preparation and monitoring of an annual budget, and future visioning and planning in relation to the property and assets of the congregation.  This committee meets the fourth Thursday of each month.

  Stewardship
Meets the second Tuesday of the month at 7:00 PM  The ministry of this committee is to educate the congregation in the Scriptural uses of the gifts of God.  This is accomplished through regular “Stewardship Moments” during worship services, education on the use of the gifts of time, talent, and money, providing opportunities to give, development and implementation of a stewardship campaign, and accurate record keeping of donations.

  Worship
The ministry of this committee is to provide opportunities for the congregation to engage in the worship of God.  This is accomplished through educating the congregation on different forms of worship and the meaning of the various components of individual and corporate worship.  Identification of various resources and styles of worship is also a responsibility of the committee.  The recruitment of lay leadership and the handling of details to enhance worship and the celebration of the sacraments are included in the duties of this committee.  The committee works closely with the pastor and other staff.  The Worship Committee meets the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 PM.
